Background of the study:
University campuses are dynamic environments where timely dissemination of information is vital to academic and administrative operations. In Jos South LGA, Plateau State, traditional physical notice boards and static digital displays have proven inadequate in conveying real-time updates, event announcements, and emergency notifications. The development of an IoT-based smart digital notice board system offers an innovative solution by integrating networked displays, sensor technologies, and cloud connectivity to ensure that campus announcements are updated automatically and in real time. These smart notice boards can pull data from various sources, including university databases, social media feeds, and emergency alert systems, thereby providing a centralized platform for communication (Emeka, 2023). With the ability to display dynamic content based on real-time data analytics, the system ensures that students, staff, and visitors receive accurate and up-to-date information. Furthermore, the integration of user feedback mechanisms and interactive features can enhance engagement and facilitate two-way communication. The scalability of the IoT-based solution allows for its implementation across multiple campus locations, ensuring consistent and synchronized messaging throughout the university (Okafor, 2024). The system also supports remote management, enabling administrators to update content instantly without the need for physical intervention. As campuses evolve into smart learning environments, the adoption of such digital communication systems becomes increasingly relevant. The implementation of smart digital notice boards not only streamlines information dissemination but also contributes to the overall modernization of campus infrastructure, thereby improving operational efficiency and user satisfaction (Babatunde, 2025).

Statement of the problem:
Traditional notice boards in university campuses in Jos South LGA are plagued by outdated information and delayed updates, leading to miscommunication and operational inefficiencies. Static displays fail to reflect real-time changes, causing students and staff to miss critical announcements and emergency alerts (Adeniyi, 2023). The reliance on manual updates further exacerbates these issues, as delays in content refresh can compromise the timeliness and accuracy of information. This outdated method of communication not only affects daily administrative operations but also hampers the overall effectiveness of campus management, particularly during urgent situations. The absence of a dynamic, automated system prevents the integration of various data sources, resulting in fragmented messaging and reduced engagement among the campus community (Ibrahim, 2024). Financial and logistical challenges have historically limited the adoption of modern digital solutions, leaving universities reliant on inefficient traditional methods. Without a robust IoT-based smart digital notice board, the institution risks persistent communication gaps and missed opportunities for timely intervention during emergencies. There is a pressing need to develop a system that leverages real-time data and remote management capabilities to ensure that campus announcements are current, accurate, and accessible to all stakeholders (Chukwu, 2025).

Objectives of the study:

  • To design an IoT-based smart digital notice board system for real-time campus communication.

  • To assess the system’s effectiveness in enhancing information dissemination and user engagement.

  • To propose integration strategies for linking the digital notice board with existing university communication channels.

Research questions:

  • How effective is the IoT-based digital notice board in providing real-time updates on campus announcements?

  • What impact does the system have on user engagement and satisfaction?

  • How can the system be integrated with current communication infrastructures to streamline information dissemination?

Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it explores the potential of IoT-based digital notice boards to revolutionize campus communication. The findings will aid university administrators in creating more efficient, responsive, and engaging information dissemination systems that enhance operational efficiency and improve stakeholder satisfaction.

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to the design and implementation of an IoT-based smart digital notice board for university announcements in Jos South LGA, Plateau State. It does not cover other communication systems or different regions.

Definitions of terms:

  • IoT (Internet of Things): A network of interconnected devices that facilitate real-time data communication.

  • Digital Notice Board: An electronic display system used to present information dynamically.

  • Smart System: A technology-enhanced system that automates processes and adapts to real-time data.
